Facts About Our Schools
About New Story Schools
In December 2009, Milestones Achievement Centers of America (MAC) changed its name to New Story to better communicate its mission in helping children with serious and/or complex educational and behavioral challenges create new stories for themselves and their families and live high-quality lives. The best story that a child can write is one that includes returning to their home school – giving them the opportunity to build upon their achievements and add to their “New Story.”
Since 1997, our highly-skilled educators and therapists have been working with children and their families to provide personalized education and support to help them overcome their challenges and achieve success. The New Story family strongly believes in treating the child’s behavior first, so they are better positioned to learn new skills and create their own “new stories” for the present and the future.
Each child’s team at New Story works closely with the local school system, family members and other professionals in the child’s life to create an individualized program to meet their needs. Our goal is to teach children the necessary social, behavioral and educational skills they need to be successful in life – and return them to their home school as quickly as possible.
To date, the New Story team has helped thousands of students overcome educational and behavioral hurdles and achieve success in their lives. We all work together to create new stories in our students’ lives – their stories of success collectively become our ”new story.”
New Story schools, a group of privately-held schools licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, serve children ages 5 to 21 years.
New Story is a subsidiary of Baltimore-based Salisbury House, Inc., which is the parent company of several subsidiary companies that are designed to help children and adults with serious and/or complex educational, behavioral, medical, and other challenges lead high-quality lives.
Founder & President
More than twelve years ago, Paul Volosov, Ph.D., founded New Story schools (formerly Milestone Achievement Centers of America – MAC) and New Story services (formerly Milestones Community Healthcare) with the goal of helping children with serious and complex challenges live high-quality lives. Throughout his career as a psychologist and entrepreneur, Paul identified a gap in the system – the need for educational, behavioral and emotional services for children and families who are faced with the most serious and/or complex issues.
Paul is passionate about helping others and dedicated to ensuring that children and families in the New Story family have an opportunity to grow to their fullest potential. Each staff member and student has the opportunity to create individual new stories – collectively, creating a much larger “New Story.”
Paul continues to expand New Story’s offerings and locations to meet the needs of children and their families.
Curriculum
New Story takes a personalized approach to developing a curriculum that is designed to address the needs of each individual student. At New Story schools, educators and professionals work with parents, guardians and school districts to create personalized learning plans designed to address behavioral and educational needs.
New Story’s primary goal is to help students make educational and developmental progress, so they can return to their home school as quickly as possible.
Class Size
In order to provide students with the attention and care they need, classes do not have more than eight children and there are no more than ten classes at each school.
Educational Services
In addition to education, other services are provided at New Story schools, including Behavioral Support Services (BSS), speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, crisis intervention, counseling and nursing care. New Story provides behavioral support, including Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA Consulting), which is offered in the school, outside of school hours and/or within the home setting.
How to Enroll
Students are enrolled at New Story schools through referral by a parent, guardian, school personnel or a behavioral health professional. Each child is evaluated for possible enrollment at no cost to the parent or guardian.
The costs to attend New Story schools are covered by the home school district and/or the state funded Medical Assistance Program in almost all cases. New Story works closely with local school districts to determine the best solution for each child.
Locations
Currently, there are nine New Story school locations throughout Pennsylvania, including Allentown, Berwick, Dubois, Harrisburg, Indiana, Monroeville, Wyoming, Wyomissing (a suburb of Reading) and York. Future schools are in development in the following regions: Lancaster, Throop (Lackawanna County) and Wyomissing.
